Fabric ruined after one wash

I I just bought this for my husband and we always wash underwear before wearing it. The fabric is completely ruined and looks like I have had it for several years. I contacted AE about this and while I understand their policy says they can’t take anything used or worn I essentially feel like I was sold a defect item.
