Real Talk with Jameela Jamil: Being an empowered woman

Actress, Activist & #AerieREAL Role Model, Jameela Jamil, joined Multimedia Reporter, Elizabeth Holmes, in LA this spring for a Real Talk about what it means to be an empowered woman.

Check out some of our favorite moments from this powerful morning.

What does it mean to be an empowered woman in 2019?

“Being empowered means being free to only measure myself by my own standards. If I like me, that’s all I need.”

What happens when you make a mistake on social media?

“I’m fine with speaking my truth, and if my truth is wrong and if I get called out, I now just say ‘I apologize, and now you can all learn alongside me what I did wrong.’ I’m so glad I’ve been called out. We’ve got to normalize people making mistakes. We’ve all made mistakes and we have to allow for that so we can encourage progress.”

“I’m trying to promote being a feminist in progress, which is someone that has aspirations toward being the ‘perfect’ evolved human being but isn’t there yet. That’s all of us.”

Do you have any regrets?

“The thing I most regret in the world is how much time I’ve spent hating my body. It takes me from A to B, and has kept me alive, and helps me breathe every day. That’s the thing I most regret, it’s the thing that I’m most embarrassed of and disappointed in. I’m disappointed of how many hours of my life I spent hating myself for no reason. That is the only thing I wish I could take back, just so I could have those hours back. But what I’ve been able to do is stop you, hopefully, from losing the same amount of time that I have.”

What’s one thing we should all leave here and do today?

“Go home and write down a list of everything that you are—everything that you’ve gone through, everything that you’ve struggled through, everything that you’re currently struggling through, everything that you will become one day. Write down that list, and remember who you are.”
